In short
What bespoke lighting means, how it differs from standard fittings, what you can customise and how a UK commission works, from drawings to installation.

Bespoke lighting is a fitting designed and made to your brief: your size, material, light colour and controls, rather than chosen from a fixed catalogue range. In the UK, a good commission runs from a conversation or drawing, through a specification, to a light made to order and fitted by a qualified electrician.

This guide is for homeowners, interior designers, architects and hospitality buyers who care about craft and good light. It explains what you can change, what the process looks like, and which technical points deserve attention before you order.

TL;DR

  • Bespoke means made to your specification. Custom lighting is the everyday phrase for the same idea: size, wood or material, colour temperature, controls and mounting are all agreed before making begins.
  • At IVYLUX every light is made to order in our UK workshop and takes 4-6 weeks to make. The Geometric Oak and Geometric Walnut table lamps take 2-3 weeks.
  • Settle the practical numbers first: hanging height, fitting size, 3000K warm white as a starting point, and a dimmable control.
  • Ceiling lights should be fitted by a qualified electrician. UK electrical work in dwellings sits under Part P of the Building Regulations.
  • Trade buyers can apply for a trade account or send drawings for a quote.

What bespoke lighting actually means

The word bespoke comes from tailoring: cloth “spoken for” by a particular customer. Applied to lighting, it means the fitting does not exist until you ask for it. Someone designs it around your room, your ceiling, your table or your building, and then makes it.

That is different from a product with a few options. A catalogue light may come in two finishes and three lengths. A bespoke light starts from your constraints: a stairwell drop of a certain height, a dining table of a certain length, a yacht saloon with a 24V supply.

In practice, most commissions sit on a spectrum. At one end, you take an existing design and change its size, wood and controls. At the other, you send drawings and the workshop develops a new fitting, with technical drawings, a prototype and sometimes a small production run.

Bespoke, custom and standard: the real differences

Searchers use “custom lighting” and “bespoke lighting” interchangeably, and in everyday UK usage they are. The meaningful distinction is between made-to-order and made-for-stock.

Standard stock fitting Made to order Fully bespoke
Starting point A finished catalogue item An existing design Your brief or drawings
What you choose Colour or finish, perhaps Size, wood, controls, colour temperature Form, dimensions, materials, optics, controls
Lead time Days Weeks Weeks to months, depending on prototyping
Best for Quick replacements Homes and offices wanting a precise fit Hospitality, architecture, unusual spaces

The benefit of made-to-order is fit. A pendant that is 10 cm (4 in) too short over a dining table looks like a mistake. One cut to the table is a decision.

What can be customised

Most people think of size and finish. In a well-engineered light there is much more to settle, and the less visible choices decide how the light feels in use.

  • Size and proportion. Length, diameter and drop. A linear pendant over a table usually looks balanced when it is clearly shorter than the table, leaving room at each end.
  • Wood or material. At IVYLUX our woods are solid oak, walnut and beech on most designs, and iroko on selected pieces, all finished by hand with Danish oil. Some of our lamps use other materials: the mushroom, origami and minimalist lamps have sugarcane-based shades, and the pleated table lamp is 3D printed with a wooden base. None of those is solid wood.
  • Light colour. Our standard is 3000K warm white. 4000K and 6500K are available on request, and 2700K or tunable white on selected designs.
  • Colour rendering. Our lights offer colour rendering of up to CRI 97, which matters where fabrics, skin tones, food or artwork are on show.
  • Controls. Standard on/off, a dimmable driver, remote control or Alexa Wi-Fi. Our table lamps use a touch dimmer.
  • Suspension. Our pendant suspensions adjust up to 100 cm (39 in) as standard and up to 200 cm (79 in) on request.
  • Mounting. Pendant, flush ceiling, table, desk or floor.
  • Voltage and environment. Our standard lights are rated IP20 for dry indoor rooms. IP44 versions for damp areas are made only on request. Special supplies, such as 24V, can be specified for marine use.

How a bespoke light is designed and made

The process is simpler than people expect, provided the brief is clear. Here is how we work.

  1. Brief. Tell us the room, the ceiling height, the table or area the light serves, and how you use the space. Photographs and a rough sketch help more than adjectives.
  2. Specification. We agree dimensions, wood, light colour, CRI, control type and mounting. For anything unusual, our team produces technical drawings.
  3. Samples. If wood tone matters, order wood samples before you commit. More on that below.
  4. Making. Each piece is made to order in our UK workshop and takes 4-6 weeks. LEDs are integrated into the wooden structure, not bolted on afterwards.
  5. Delivery. UK delivery is free on every IVYLUX light.
  6. Installation. A qualified electrician fits the light.

Our team brings more than 25 years in technical lighting, lighting control and product development to this process. That shows most in the details no one photographs: driver choice, how heat leaves the fitting, how the dimming behaves at low levels.

If you already have drawings, the bespoke lights page is the place to send them.

Choosing bespoke lighting room by room

The room decides the brief. These are the starting points we work from.

Dining tables and kitchen islands

A table is the one place where a light is judged at eye level and from below. As a working guide, hang the bottom of the pendant roughly 75 to 85 cm (30 to 33 in) above the table surface, then adjust to ceiling height and the people who sit there. Keep the fitting narrower than the table by at least 30 cm (12 in) at each end.

For a long table, a linear form gives an even wash. Our oak LED linear pendant is made to a length you choose, with a dimmable driver so that dinner and homework can share the same fitting.

Low ceilings

Below about 240 cm (94 in), a hanging pendant can get in the way. A flush fitting spreads light across the ceiling and keeps the headroom. Our SquareLUX square flush ceiling light does this in solid oak, with the diffused glow that flush fittings do best. Circlux round and Hexagon versions are available too, so you can match the shape of the room.

Bedrooms, desks and home offices

Here the light is close to the body, so softness and control matter more than power. A touch dimmer on a table lamp lets you lower the level without reaching for a wall switch. We would suggest 3000K for bedside use, and a slightly cooler 4000K at a desk if you read or draw for long periods.

Landings, halls and stairwells

Long drops are where bespoke earns its place. Measure from the ceiling fixing to the point you want the light to end, then add the suspension adjustment you need. Our standard suspension adjusts up to 100 cm (39 in), and up to 200 cm (79 in) on request, so tell us the full drop in your brief.

Bathrooms and damp areas

Standard IVYLUX lights are rated IP20 and are not for bathrooms. If you need a fitting for a damp area, ask us for an IP44 version, which we make only on request. Bathroom zones carry their own electrical rules, so your electrician should confirm what is permitted where the fitting will sit.

Pool and snooker rooms

A table light has a demanding job: even light over the whole cloth, with no glare in the player’s eyes. Our pool table lights start from £949, and we make them to a customer’s own table. Custom-size pool table lights carry a £200 delivery charge.

Light colour and colour rendering, explained simply

Kelvin describes the colour of the white. Lower numbers are warmer, closer to candlelight. Higher numbers look crisper and bluer.

  • 2700K: very warm, a soft amber. Available on selected designs.
  • 3000K: warm white, our standard. Comfortable for living rooms, bedrooms and dining.
  • 4000K: neutral white. Suits kitchens, studios and workspaces. Available on request.
  • 6500K: daylight white, clinical in a home. Available on request.

CRI, or colour rendering index, tells you how faithfully a light shows colours. Our lights offer up to CRI 97. That helps wood grain, upholstery and skin tones look as they should. Our LEDs are rated for 50,000 hours.

For guidance on how light is designed across a whole scheme, the CIBSE Lighting Guide LG23 covers the architectural lighting design process, including safety and inclusive design. It is written for lighting designers, architects, electrical engineers and contractors. Our own piece on designing light as a spatial tool is a gentler starting point.

Matching wood tone and furniture

Wood on a screen is never wood in the room. Oak reads pale in north light and honeyed under warm LEDs. Walnut can look nearly black in a dim hall.

Our wood samples cost £29.99 with free UK delivery, and the cost is refunded when you order a light. You can order wood samples and hold them against your floor, table and joinery in the light of the actual room.

If you want the light to match existing furniture, we can match it from an offcut or a photograph. A clear photograph in daylight, with the piece beside a neutral white sheet of paper, gives us the most to work with.

Safety, regulations and installation in the UK

A bespoke light is still an electrical product, and the same rules apply as for any other fitting.

Installation. In UK dwellings, Approved Document P states that Part P applies to electrical installations in or attached to buildings, including houses and flats. It requires reasonable provision to protect people from fire or injury. The same guidance explains that installations should be inspected and tested, and that compliance can generally be shown with a BS 7671 electrical installation certificate. We always recommend a qualified electrician for installing IVYLUX ceiling lights. Ask them to confirm the fixing can carry the weight, and to earth the fitting correctly.

Product safety. GOV.UK guidance on the Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016 says that manufacturers must carry out conformity assessment and affix the relevant marking before placing electrical equipment on the Great Britain market. The same page confirms that either UKCA or CE marking can be used in GB, provided essential safety requirements are met. Whoever you commission, ask what standard the fitting is designed to. The general requirements for luminaires are set out in BS EN IEC 60598-1, which covers construction, wiring, earthing and protection against electric shock.

Practical points before you order:

  • Check the ceiling fixing. Solid timber pendants are heavier than they look.
  • Decide where the ceiling rose or junction box will sit, and whether it needs moving.
  • Check that your dimmer or control suits the driver in the light. We supply the control with the fitting, so you do not have to guess.
  • Allow for the lead time. Making takes 4-6 weeks, so order before the electrician is booked, not after.

Warranty, returns and delivery

Clear terms matter more on a made-to-order purchase, so here they are.

  • Warranty: 3 years on manufacturing defects, counted from the day the light arrives.
  • Returns: standard IVYLUX lights can be returned within 30 days of delivery, and you pay the return postage. Lights made to your own specification, such as a custom size, wood, finish or design, cannot be returned for a change of mind.
  • Delivery: free in the UK. It costs £25.99 to the EU, and £39.99 to the United States, Canada and Australia.

Bespoke lighting for commercial spaces

A restaurant, hotel lobby or office has different pressures: long hours of use, a brand to express, and often a specifier between the maker and the client. The brief usually starts with drawings, a lighting schedule and a fixed number of fittings.

For these projects we would rather see the drawings than push a single product. Send them through our bespoke lights page, and we will advise on dimensions, light levels, controls and how many pieces can be made as a small run. Interior designers, architects, builders and hospitality buyers can also apply for a trade account.

Our guide to specifying commercial pendant lighting covers the practical points in more detail.

One project we can describe is an African teak oval pendant for a yacht saloon, 110 × 45 cm (43 × 18 in) and 24V. It shows what bespoke means at its most literal: the supply, the space and the shape all dictated by the vessel.

Our perspective

We make lights the way an engineer and a maker would both want them made. The form comes from the wood and the room. The performance comes from the LED, the driver and the control.

The mistake we see most often is choosing a light for how it looks in a photograph, and then finding it is the wrong size, the wrong colour or the wrong height. Bespoke work removes that risk. You decide the dimensions, the warmth and the way it dims before anything is cut.

Solid wood and integrated LEDs also suit each other. The timber gives the light a body and a warmth that metal and plastic do not. Finished by hand with Danish oil, it ages quietly, and the glow stays soft whether the light is at full level or turned low for the evening.

Ask for what the room needs. A precise brief gets a precise light.

FAQ

What is bespoke lighting?

Bespoke lighting is a light designed and made to a customer’s own brief, rather than bought ready-made. Size, material, light colour and controls are agreed before making begins. The result fits the room instead of the room adapting to the light.

How long does bespoke lighting take to make?

At IVYLUX, every light is made to order in our UK workshop and takes 4-6 weeks. The Geometric Oak and Geometric Walnut table lamps take 2-3 weeks. Add time for any wood samples, drawings or prototypes.

Is custom lighting more expensive than standard lighting?

It costs more than a mass-produced fitting, because it is made individually and to a specification. Our pool table lights start from £949. For other lights, the price depends on the size, wood and controls you choose, so send us the details through our bespoke lights page.

Do I need an electrician to fit a bespoke ceiling light?

Yes. We always recommend a qualified electrician for installing IVYLUX ceiling lights. In dwellings, electrical work falls under Part P of the Building Regulations, and an electrician can provide the certification that shows the work is safe.

Can I return a bespoke light?

Standard IVYLUX lights can be returned within 30 days of delivery, and you pay the return postage. Lights made to your own specification, such as a custom size, wood, finish or design, cannot be returned for a change of mind. That is why we agree the details with you first.
